Residential status determination
Working out whether you are resident, non-resident or RNOR for a year, which decides what India can tax.
NRIs visiting India, returning Indians, expatriates and anyone who spent long periods abroad.
Documents required
- Passport with travel stamps for the last ten years
- Details of Indian income
- Citizenship or OCI status
Residential status depends on the number of days you stay in India, your Indian income and your citizenship. The rules changed in recent years, including a lower day count for some Indian citizens with Indian income above ₹15 lakh, and "deemed residency" in some cases.
We work out your status for each year, explain what it means for your foreign income, and plan visits so there are no surprises.
